Hạ-Lan (b. 2000) is a sculptor whose woodcarving practice is rooted in improvisation, intuition, and attention to material. She celebrates the liveliness of wood — embodying grain, memory, resistance, and rhythm. Inspired by the defiant spirit of graffiti, the open-endedness of asemic writing, and the immediacy of DIY culture, Hạ-Lan approaches carving as a process of intuitive decision-making—an act of wandering, responding, and clarifying in the moment’s moment. Drawn to the contrast between the handmade and the industrial, Hạ-Lan leans toward a future where natural sense and the mark is cherished. Her sculptures are not monuments, but beings—small creatures, quiet portals, invitations to immerse oneself and know from varying perspectives.
Born and raised in Oregon, USA, Hạ-Lan holds a BFA in Product Design from Parsons School of Design. Hạ-Lan currently lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City. She collaborates with Nguyễn Thảo Ngân on Sculpture Club, a mostly weekly occassion to make 3D objects. She is also a steward of Our Space, a living and making space in Chợ Lơn.
